The Elderberry Gathering
Foraging, Folklore & the Art of Elderberry Syrup
The berries are ripening. The season is turning. It’s time to gather and learn to make your own immune boosting Elderberry syrup
Join Feebee and Sika the Whippet for a gorgeous late-summer evening in the wilds of Glenasmole, as we follow the hedgerows through that magical moment when summer begins to soften into autumn.
We’ll begin with a slow, immersive foraging walk around Glenasmole Reservoir, discovering the wild plants that are changing with the season and turning our attention to the abundance beginning to appear in the hedgerows.
And, of course, the star of the evening – elderberries.
Together, we’ll learn how to safely identify elder, explore its folklore and traditional uses, and gather ripe, inky berries from the hedgerows. We’ll talk about the old ways these beautiful berries have been used as a seasonal preparation and how you can bring a little of that wild knowledge into your own home.
Then, with our harvest gathered (and fingers quite possibly stained purple), we’ll make our way back to Goughies Coffee, where the making begins.
Using the elderberries we’ve foraged together, Feebee will guide you through the art of making your own elderberry syrup – a delicious, warming traditional preparation to have tucked away as we move into the colder months.
You’ll make your very own elderberry syrup to take home with you, while learning the process and recipe so you can make it again for yourself and your family throughout the season.
Expect baskets and berries, wild plants and folklore, bubbling pots, purple fingers and plenty of time spent immersed in the landscape.
This is not simply a foraging walk or a syrup-making class. It’s an evening of gathering, making and reconnecting with the season – following something from the hedgerow, into the pot, and finally into a bottle you’ll carry home.
Come wander the hedgerows, gather the season’s elderberries and make a little wild magic to see you into autumn.
